The Greater Corner Brook Board of Trade came into existence on August 15, 1912, and was known originally as the Bay of Islands Board of Trade located in Curling. It held its first annual meeting in 1913.
Over the years, it underwent a name change to the Bay of Islands Businessman`s Association. The Association affiliated with the Canadian Board of Trade of Commerce in 1949. In May 1950, the Association changed its name to the Board of Trade of Commerce and moved from Curling to Corner Brook. A branch of the Junior Board of Trade of commerce was begun in 1956 and existed until 1977.
The Board of Trade of Commerce became formally incorporated in 1958. It changed its name to the Greater Corner Brook Board of Trade in 2003 to reflect the fact that it dealt with members outside the City of Corner Brook and that both its present and future spheres of influence more aptly were represented by a board of trade.
The strength of the Greater Corner Brook Board of Trade is that it is business – its members know how to turn opportunities for business promotion, development, and growth, into deals; it can mobilize a single voice for business, and it believes business must provide leadership to the community and government for economic development.
The Greater Corner Brook Board of Trade is a not-for-profit organization operating in accordance with the by-laws adopted by its members. The Greater Corner Brook Board of Trade is incorporated. An elected volunteer Board of Directors has fiduciary responsibility for carrying out the activities approved by the Board. It has office staff which is delegated tasks and powers by the Board of Directors. The Board consists of a President, 1st Vice President, 2nd VIce President, Secretary, Treasurer, Past President, and no less than three and no more than five At-Large Directors.
Directors of the Greater Corner Brook Board of Trade are elected by members of the Greater Corner Brook Board of Trade each year at the Annual General Meeting.
The Board of Directors meet at least once a month and more often, if required. Quorum for meetings is 50% + 1 of all voting Directors.
The purpose of the Greater Corner Brook Board of Trade (Corner Brook-Bay of Islands-Steady Brook) is to promote business growth locally and globally throughout the business lifecycle of our members.
