Corner Brook’s business community reports an overall positive attitude about conducting business in the city.  In a 2008 Business Retention and Expansion study of 79 businesses, the majority of business owners or managers reported that Corner Brook was a good to excellent place to do business and would recommend the region to other businesses.  As well, 81% communicated that sales had increased in the past 3 years and 71% expect this trend to continue. About two-thirds were planning to expand their operations in the next three years.
 

As of 2009, 654 hundred businesses have made Corner Brook their chosen place to operate with an additional 118 registered as home-based businesses.
 

In terms of firm size, Corner Brook is mainly composed of small to medium sized firms, with 90% of the firms having between 1 and 9 employees.
 

While most firms are small-to-medium sized, larger firms play an important role in the economy.  Kruger Inc., a leading international paper producer, operates Corner Brook Pulp and Paper (CBPP) Limited.  This newsprint mill contributes a large portion to Newfoundland and Labrador’s GDP. In 2009, Corner Brook’s retail sales were estimated to reach 82% above the national average.  Future retail sale projections make Corner Brook an attractive city to locate a retail business.
