FROM WESTERN NEW YORK TO WESTERN NEWFOUNDLAND:
A RISING TIDE OF OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION
The Greater Corner Brook Board of Trade is delighted to announce the success
of the 2nd International Symposium on Oil & Gas Resources in Western
Newfoundland, June 5-8, 2007. The Symposium exceeded expectations as the
premiere networking, information and prospecting forum on the fast developing
onshore and offshore oil and gas industry in Western Newfoundland as it brought
together industry, investors, government and researchers from Newfoundland and
Labrador, Canada and the U.S.
Speakers and other delegates had an opportunity to partake in a
Program featuring:
*A timely and extensive review of the burgeoning Ordovician Carbonate Play of
Northeastern North America from Western New York through Quebec to Western
Newfoundland. The oil and gas potential of Carboniferous-aged sediments from
Southern New Brunswick to Western Newfoundland were examined.
*One full day of presentations by international researchers and businesses,
including exploration companies holding Western Newfoundland exploration rights.
*Two one-day Field Trips led by Cambro-Ordovician Carbonate specialist Dr. Ian
Knight of the Geological Survey of Newfoundland and Labrador featuring Western
Newfoundland’s spectacular natural environments—a land based Port au Port
Peninsula field trip and lobster boil featuring coastal outcrops of the Cambro-Ordovician
carbonate platform (Ellenberger/Beekmantown equivalent); and a Boat Tour of the
fiord-like northern Bay of Islands focused on the seafloor sediments, oceanic
crust and mantle rocks of North Arm and on the Ordovician carbonates of Penguin
and Goose Arms.
